Death of TMG?
In a Gartner report titled Magic Quadrant for Secure Web Gateway, published May 25, the first thing we noticed when perusing the matrix of challengers, leaders, niche players and visionaries in the SWG space is that a prominent name is missing in action: that of Microsoft. But if you read on, you find out why.
On page 5, you’ll find a statement that is likely to shock and dismay many Microsoft customers, which says that Microsoft has confirmed to Gartner that it is not going to be shipping another full version release of TMG. The report goes on to say that TMG is in sustaining mode and Microsoft doesn’t intend to compete head-to-head with other vendors in that space. The good news is that the usual five year mainstream/five year extended support lifecycle still applies.
What does this mean for Microsoft in the security space? What does it mean for those organizations with current deployments of TMG? I anticipate many questions (and, I hope, some answers) in the weeks to come, and I’ll be taking a closer look at this development next week in my Microsoft InSights column over on TechRepublic, so stay tuned.”

Bad news.
Let’s hope UAG gets cheaper and more flexible. But for a proxy server where do we go?
TMG is cost effective and reliable and wonderfully integrated with OWA, ActiveSync adn Windows in general.
If we make enough noise perhaps it will last as long as public folders in Exchange?
Where do we make noise?

Very, very sad news. TMG is the best, and smartest, firewall there is. All it really lacks from my perspective is IPv6 support.
Well, evidently, it also lacks customers. And, I suppose that means too many IT folks are afraid to get their fingernails dirty in understanding what their software is actually doing with their Internet connection. Pity that.
Anyone else make a Layer 3 firewall?

Very bad news. OK you can sell it only at big enterprises. I run ISA and TMG in my enviremont but it is to expensive for very small business.
I use Fortigate for small business but would prefer to sell TMG at the same price !

The demise of Threat Management Gateway: Is Microsoft backing away from the edge? | TechRepublic Says:
May 31st, 2011 at 1:12 pm
[…] Last week, I reported in my blog over at ISAServer.org that Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Secure Web Gateway, published May 25, left Microsoft out of the matrix completely. The report explained that this was because Microsoft had informed Gartner that it wouldn’t be shipping another full version of TMG (Threat Management Gateway), that the product is now in “sustaining” mode, and that the company doesn’t intend to compete head-to-head with other vendors in that (the secure Web gateway/firewall) space. TMG 2010 is part of the Microsoft Forefront family of security products and is the latest incarnation of the software formerly known as ISA Server, which itself evolved out of Microsoft’s Proxy Server. TMG provides advanced stateful packet and application layer inspection (firewall) services, VPN services, and Web caching. I have a special affinity for TMG because my husband, Tom Shinder, and I specialized in Proxy Server/ISA Server early in our IT careers. We wrote several books and many articles about the products and have been involved with the ISAServer.org Web site for more than 10 years. When Tom left to become a Microsoft employee in 2009, I took over his lead author role there. Thus, to me, TMG isn’t just any old Microsoft Server — it’s been a big part of my life and my career. […]

But please Microsoft, WHY??
Read it everywhere on the net, ask any network proffessional, you will get the same answer: -TMG works great with your products and it is a kick as$ proxy/firewall!
If TMG had support for trunking, vlan and IPv6 (full support for IPv6 that is), everyone would seriously consider about changing most of their firewalls. I was really hoping that these functions would be implemented in the next generation of TMG (or whatever they would call it), but now, I am reading that it may die? I can not believe it; I don´t WANT to believe it. MS must have plans to develop a successor…
Not so many customers? So maybe it is, but how much effort did they put in introducing the product? Many midsize and large companies live with their firewalls 5-10 years, and how old is the TMG? Not even 2-years, so…

Waiting around for MS to make up its mind is a luxury we didnt’ have. I loved ISA 2004 as part of SBS 2003 and we used it for years. I loved the easy of configuration, I loved the custom reports I was able to make using SQL Server Reporting Services (you can instruct ISA 2004 to save its logs in a SQL Database).
But when it was time to get off SBS (we have more than 75 users), I could not find a clear roadmap for ISA/TMG.
We now use Juniper for our Gateway and Security needs.
