ISA 2006 Update for Exchange 2007 Fails (miserably)
While I don’t have Exchange 2007 running yet on my network (I still can’t figure out how to create secure SSL sessions for a variety of protocols using the horked Exchange 2007 UI), I thought I’d update my ISA 2006 firewall with the optional Update for Publishing Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 for Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2006 (KB925403). Unfortunately, things didn’t pan out the way I expected and the installation failed twice. Now, I know that some out there might suggest that I kick the perms, but I don’t have that button
I’m not used to weird things happening on my ISA Firewall and never had problems installing updates in the past, so this is a bit disconcerting. Maybe the ISA Firewall team took this update from the Exchange Team, in which case I suppose I’ll have to enable Telnet on the ISA Firewall and enter some sort of secret command-line code to get it to work!
Below is a picture of my RDP session of the ISA Firewall, as seen after trying to install the update. Any insight into this problem is highly appreciated and I hope to return the favor on Tuesday.

Hi Tom
I did the E2007 update on ISA2006 from the downloaded file and not from Microsoft Update and it all worked perfect first time. The update restarts the firewall service (hectic for a UI/management update) but that may be a cause for the Microsoft Update web site not working.
I’m with you on the Exchange 2007 command line stuff - If i wanted to use a lengthy command line admin interface to do what I USED to be able to do with a tick box I’d use Sendmail on Linux! Roll on SP1 where more is being added to the UI again (like public folder management).

Hi Steven,
I’ll give that a try — download the file and try to install it that way. Hopefully the worst that will happen is that I’ll see another type of error message
You really have to wonder where the Exchange group’s collective heads were at when they cobbled together their current UI. Microsoft is riddled with SD3+C and a big part of that is to de-obfuscate security configuration so as to minimize configuration error. So what do they do? The do an end-run around 20 years of Microsoft marketing on how GUI’s reduce ramp up time and operator errors due to error prone command line configuration. There’s a reason why so many PIXes are misconfigured!
Thanks!
Tom
