In Place Upgrade from ISA 2004 to ISA 2006 Goes Well, except for….

Just a quick note to let everyone know that I’ve had no problems with in place upgrades of ISA 2004 SE to ISA 2006 SE. The upgrade process is very simple, and the installation wizard walks through any tasks you might need to carry out before performing the upgrade. For example, you need to uninstall both the Firewall Client Share and the SMTP Message Screener from ISA 2004 before upgrading to ISA 2006.

The only problem with the upgrade is that the System Performance graphs in the Dashboard of the Monitoring node do not work. I noticed that this was a problem in some of the beta versions of ISA 2006, but was fixed in the last beta. However, I think they rolled back from the last beta to a previous beta for RTM, so the same issues appeared again, the only one being this problem with the System Performance graphs.

Let me know if you run into the same problem. Here’s what they look like when they’re not working:

Thanks!

Tom

Hi Tom: my isas 2006 (from first beta to current release) have never seen the graphs moving!

    Hi Tinto,
There was a version number in the private beta that was higher than the RTM, and they actually fixed the graphs. But they decided to RTM on a previous version, so now we have now graphs :(

    Hi Tom,

Thanks for publishing this article. We’re looking to upgrade our ISA 2004 server to 2006, it’s good to know that the upgrade is nice and easy, and the information on uninstalling the Firewall Client Share and Message Screener from ISA 2004 is useful!
We have a technet subscription and in the past 2 or 3 shipments there have been betas for ISA 2006, should we install the latest beta from there if it’s less buggy than the RTM?

    Cheers

    Ben

    Hi Ben,
I don’t think using an earlier beta would be a good solution. While there is a bug in the performance console, the rest of the product seem rock solid so I think you’re best off using RTM.

    Hi,

How likely is it that Microsoft will re-introduce message screener into ISA? I thought it was a nice addon.

    Hi Richard,
I’d say its very unlikely. They want people to use the built-in stuff included with Exchange and the new Exchange Edge Server functionality.

    Hi Tom,

I know this may appear an old thread now, but we’ve been running with ISA2006 since beginning of the year. Did a fix ever come out for the System Performance issue?

I’ve trawelled everywhere but you’re the only one that mentions it.

    Many thanks
    Gerry

    Hi Gerry,

No fix. It happens on every ISA 2006 machine I’ve installed.
